The Danger of Suicidal Ideation
For youth experiencing homeless or housing insecurity, suicide is a real and persistent danger. 20-68% of homeless youth report a suicide attempt in their lifetime, while less than 8% of youth in the general population report the same, making suicide prevention efforts absolutely critical. The unique social factors facing homeless and housing insecure youth are contributors to these outcomes, and as the leading cause of death among homeless youth, suicide is an issue that is unfortunately deeply linked to our work here at Anchor House.
In New Jersey, there are some tools and services that can help. If you or someone you know is facing down suicidal ideation or other mental health struggles, please consider the following resources:
Anchor House’s Direct Suicide Prevention Options for ages 10-24
Anchor House employs two therapists, Victoria (Tori) and Yuleisy (Yuli), who offer free services to the public. In addition to working directly to address suicidal ideation, Tori and Yuli can help you work through issues involving grief, loss, domestic violence, and more. Though we’re located in Trenton, these services are also available remotely by requrest – and we even provide them in Spanish.
To reach Anchor House’s therapists, dial 609-439-4215 – for English, use extension 107, and for Spanish, use extension 104.
Dial 988, the Suicide Prevention and Crisis lifeline
Formed through a nonprofit via a federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), for 15 years it existed as a 1-800 number. In 2019, the FCC increased the prominence and importance of this line, declaring it a nationwide suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline by authorizing the 3-digit dialing code 988 as the official designation for use. Their hotline also offers support for individuals with hearing impairment.
Please note, you can call this line whether it is you or someone you know who is experiencing a crisis.
